my story
Growing up in the Cotswolds, I spent my days engrossed in movies and TV shows, escaping into their worlds. The back garden became a stage where I'd morph into characters, with makeshift costumes and props to recreate the stories I'd just seen. At the age of six, my parents told me that this was ‘the art of acting’. A seed had been planted.
My parents sent me to the local piano teacher to teach me beyond incessantly smashing the keys at home. I was introduced to classical techniques, developed my relative pitch, and was taught how to read and write music. The latter became increasingly helpful later in life when I turned to musical theatre.
The transition from primary school to high school was tumultuous, draining my confidence. I shied away from auditions for school plays, my self-doubt looming large. But this only meant I had to find other ways to channel my creativity.
I turned to YouTube tutorials, teaching myself the art of filmmaking with my father's borrowed video camera. Soon I was transforming my school projects into little movies, taking on every role with gusto. However, the real magic lay in sharing these homemade movies with my loved ones. Their reactions revealed something powerful—I could make people feel emotions through my stories.
Yet, a significant hurdle remained: my confidence. To conquer it, I decided to run for Head Boy at my school. I have always been, fundamentally, a people person. I have always loved people, hearing about their stories and who they are. This is one of the many reasons I have never stopped acting - people deserve to have their stories told.
I ran a serious campaign, delivering a speech about values close to my heart: kindness, perseverance, and the impact of the Jim Carrey movie "Yes Man”. Winning that election sent my confidence soaring.
At 18, I took a giant leap towards my goal of becoming a professional actor by enrolling in Falmouth University. I initially studied television as a safety net, but deep down, I knew it wasn't my true calling. At the end of my first year, I auditioned and secured a spot in the Acting BA(Hons) program.
Once the course began, I knew I was home and I absorbed knowledge like a sponge. One of my first acting lessons changed my life. Stay with me, I know it sounds absurd, but I learnt a technique for developing believable characters, where you identify the emotion of the character in that scene, and you practice taking it to its extreme. Something just clicked and it showed me that I was a lot more capable at ‘the art of acting’ than I had previously believed.
Another pivotal moment came during a voice-over module, where I delved into the technicality of the craft. Training in the universities’ recording studios, I discovered my aspiration to not only be a working screen actor but also a voice actor. Back in my Cornish shared house, I invested in a studio condenser mic, honing my voice-over skills and building my portfolio online.
Upon graduating from Falmouth University, I shook hands with the incredible Dawn French while accepting my degree in 2019 (I know, pretty cool). The next chapter led me to East London, and I embraced the quintessential "struggling actor" lifestyle, complete with meandering mice through the apartment.
Then came 2020, a year filled with challenges for us all. One job led to another, culminating in a two year-long performing contract with Universal Studios in Osaka, Japan. Amidst the incredible culture of Japan, I expanded my acting skills, performing a multi-lingual script for thousands daily. It was here that I met my wife Maddy, an incredibly talented Australian singer and actor. After our wedding earlier this year, in sunny Australia, we started a new journey by moving back to London.
Since 2022, I have built my voice over business from the ground up. Literally! I would have never thought I’d learn to build my own voice over booth with my bare hands:
So far, life has taught me how much we need art and performance in our lives. I’m so blessed to meet people like you who are either supporting the arts or developing them.
